The inverse filter cannot be any shorter than twice the IR length. But it is advisable to select an even longer number of samples, equal to a power of 2.
With a measured IR of 1985 samples, the minimum length for the inverse filter is 4096 samples, and possibly the optimal one is 8192 samples.

Hi Angelo, based on your quote above, I think there might be an issue with the current implementation of Invert Kirkeby for Audacity:

As you can see my IR length is 5088 and I tried to set the inverse filter length to 16384. However I get an error that this cannot be longer than the source. Indeed the default value is the same as that of the IR, but the result is weird.

Thanks and this is what I usually do for the same reasons you are explaining (which are actually your findings about the ESS :))

Unfortunately I still have this type of Inverse IR
Inverse_FIlter_2

SO I am not sure if this is right or not also because the convolution between the IR and its inverse still gives me some of the problems shown previously
Might it be that the Source has some distortion? I suspect there is some listening to the sweep recordings.
In any case this does not explain me the Inver Filter.

THanks

Did you solve your issue? I also get inverse filter with that "mirrored" shape...

Hello, I use the provided Audacity 2.4.1 for Mac on OS 10.15.7 (Catalina =_= ) and my goal is to obtain an inverse filter to flatten the response of my system (vibration recording made with an accelerometer).
I've cut the track "convolved" holding the IR, obtaining a shorter and cleaner IR, about 10000 samples long. However when I apply the Invert Kirkeby tool to it, Audacity crashes more or less systematically...

Here everything is working on Catalina.
First of all, PlayOnMac now works great, so I installed my favourite Audition 1.5 and the XFM version of Aurora Plugins. This is always the best!
Then, I am running the Audacity version without much problems.
The Aurora modules refused to get enabled for a couple of times, but in the end they worked...
Be aware, indeed, that their position changed in the menus of Audacity.

Thanks!
I just realized that one has to enable both the Aurora module in the preferences AND the respective plugin-ins in the "add/remove plug-ins" menu! Very convoluted (as always in Audacity...) but it works now! Perhaps it would be useful to add these tips in www.angelofarina.it/Public/Aurora-f...-241-Readme.txt

ciao hai risolto?

I made a couple of tests on Catalina. Unfortunately, PlayOnMac does not work yet.
Audacity, instead, was released at 64 bits, but for using it under Catalina a "trick" is required, launching it form the terminal.
It is explained here:
https://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=107162
So the problem now is to recompile at 64-bits also the Aurora modules. I am sad to admit that this will take several months...
In the meanwhile, I strongly suggest that you use Bootcamp for running Windows 10 on your mac.
Due to the bad development Apple did on Mac OS, and the good improvement provided by the last upgrade of Windows 10, the same Apple machine is currently 50% faster when running Windows 10 under Bootcamp than when running Catalina.
All our Macs are now running Windows 10 under Bootcamp, and we do not see any reason to switch back to Mac OS in the next future...

Hi Angelo, I've installed the custom version of Audacity 2.4.1 for Mac available at www.angelofarina.it/Public/Aurora-for-Audacity/2.4.1/Mac/ and, despite the fact that I enabled the Aurora.so module in the preferences, I don't see any Aurora command in the menu like it used to be in Audacity 2.0.0.
I've also tried starting the application from the terminal but nothing changed.
I'm on Catalina 10.15.7 :(
Any help appreciated!

Dear Angelo, I totally agree. And the PC situation is not good either, with Windows 10 continuosly updating itself and advertising MS products. Plus, latest generation hardware is not supported anymore by Windows 7 (my OS of choice for audio). I managed to install Win7 on a new Kaby Lake PC by hacking the Intel video driver inf file, but that's really not always viable...

Anyway, concerning Audacity on OSX, I'm stuck with Sierra, as my department imposed the update "for security reasons"...
I confirm that I installed the Aurora modules in the correct path, however Audacity doesn't see them. Which is expected, given what's written at the URL that I posted above.
So I guess I'd better use Audition via PlayOnMac (in case that still works...)

UPDATE: using this workaround seems to work:
sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Audacity/
until the next reboot...

Hello, I'm having problems with Audacity 2.0.0 on OSX Sierra. It looks like Audacity has problems with Sierra: goo.gl/e1nLzz
Indeed the program doesn't see the Aurora modules, even though I correctly placed the .so files in ~/Applications/Audacity/modules/
view post Posted: 26/2/2017, 11:23 How to measure impulse responses with the Sine Sweep - Usage
dear Angelo (thanks for these great tools!)
I have a couple of questions:

1. Is there anything wrong if I use a sweep limited to 20-1000 Hz? I just wonder if the Aurora tools assume that one always uses sweeps between 20 and 20k Hz.
I'm characterizing tactile transducers and I'm only interested in frequencies below 1 kHz. I record the transducers' response with a measurement accelerometer (frequency response flat +/- 5% between 5-15000 Hz).

2. I usually measure simple vibration signals such as sine waves or band-passed noise, recording them as audio. The sensitivity specifications of the whole I/O chain are known, and making use of them I can easily obtain the corresponding values of acceleration in m/s^2. Of course for this to work, the first step is to make sure that the digital amplitudes in dBFS are meaningful. So my question is: does Aurora (namely, the convolution of sweep response with inverted sweep) alter in some way amplitudes?
